A privileged setting in the heart of the Ayala Valley
Garabilla Landetxea is located on a hill surrounded by mountains, in a unique natural setting very close to the historic medieval town of Artziniega. Its strategic location, aligned with the Mendieta Tower and linked to the northern route of the Camino de Santiago, preserves vestiges of an old pilgrims’ hospital, adding exceptional cultural value to the surroundings.
Artziniega and its heritage
Just 1.5 km away lies Artziniega, a medieval village with three streets forming a historic center filled with stately homes and well-preserved heritage. Points of interest include:
- Ortiz de Molinillo Tower
- Convent of the Augustinian Mothers
- Parish of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
- Museums: Ethnographic, Sacred Art and Santxotena
In the surrounding area you can also visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Oak, the Mendieta Tower and the medieval village of Retes de Tudela, with its Peñalba mountain.

Quejana and the Ayala Valley
In the heart of Ayala, Garabilla is located very close to the Quejana Monumental Complex, one of the area’s major cultural landmarks. Its surroundings offer the opportunity to discover places such as:
- The Peregaña Hill Fort
- The historic villages of the Sierra Salvada, such as Menoio (over 900 years old)
- The church of Añes, with its outstanding facade
- The Maroño reservoir

Nature, wildlife and rivers
The area around Garabilla Landetxea is notable for its natural beauty, with mountains, forests, and meadows creating a varied and tranquil landscape. It’s common to spot deer, roe deer, eagles, or griffon vultures, making the area ideal for those who enjoy observing wildlife in its natural habitat.
The Herrerías River flows through the valley, forming small dams and areas of calm water, perfect for cooling off in summer or strolling along its banks. Its trails, along with the diverse flora and fauna, make this area a perfect place to disconnect and enjoy nature at any time of year.

Routes and outdoor activities
The location is perfect for hiking and mountain enthusiasts, with trails for all levels and distances. Some must-see attractions include:
- Mount Gorbea, visible from one of the rooms
- Source of the Nervión River
- Mount Santiago, with vulture habitats and old wolf dens
You can also go on excursions, do sports activities, go on family walks or explore nature trails.

Two towns in Bizkaia are located just 15 km apart:
- Orduña, a historic walled city
- Balmaseda, a town of great cultural and gastronomic interest

Local events and traditions
The last weekend of August sees the celebration of the Medieval Market of Artziniega, an event that transforms the old town into an authentic period market, with traditional costumes, artisan stalls and thousands of visitors every year.
